It was in 1777 that the Gladiateur made its first travel to the Americas. It was part of the fleet that carried the Marquis de La Fayette and his companions to the assistance of George Washington's "Insurgents". The Gladiateur's second voyage began at Toulon on April 18, 1778, when it left with the Protecteur and 11 other vessels, under the orders of Vice-Admiral d'Estaing. The Gladiateur made it third and last voyage to the Americas in August 1781, carrying the French volunteer reinforcements who were to participate in the Marquis de Rochambeau's victory at Yorktown on October 19, 1781. The Gladiateur was put out of commission at Philadelphia, on April 1, 1782.
